For over 9 years now I’ve been in my home for the Holidays. We don’t have lots of family to go to so I pretty much have everything at my house.
Every Yom Tov, I would make lists and notes before the Holiday and after it was over about what worked and what didn’t work. And you know what, I LOVE doing that. And I know that a lot of being HATE doing that stuff!
I realized after my lists and notes became really comprehensive, a combination of my own successes and the habits of other women I’d interviewed, that more people could benefit from my sharing these plans with them.
If we’re all cleaning, cooking, grocery shopping for P over anyway, why shouldn’t we collaborate together and share our strategies and techniques? And if you don’t want to spend your time finding out how to do all of this work, why not outsource it?
Jewish women are often too embarr ed to ask for help. Anyone ever hear of “Supermom”? I don’t know what it is, peer pressure, a very high standard, but often I see that women in the community often hide the fact that they feel stressed and overwhelmed. They just don’t want everyone to know. Understood.
I guess I’m just very open and sometimes not as private as I should be, but I wasn’t afraid to ask other women just what they were doing that made their Yom Tov cooking, shopping, baking, and organizing seem so easy. And once I got the information from the women I knew had it all together, I knew I had to get that information out to many more people than just myself. That’s how the Yom Tov Perfectly Organized Collection was born.
Let me ask you this. How many women can you call on right now who can give you solutions to the challenges of overwhelm you feel right now? And I don’t mean your mother or your sisters. I’m talking about the women you see in the Kosher butcher or Kosher grocery that look impeccably dressed, the ones you’re sure whose houses are immaculate, that you’re a y bit intimidated by? And do you Want to do all that work?
In my own experience, the relationships I created outside of my own parental relationships have been directly responsible for my own success as a homemaker. Do you agree?
Because I grew up with two parents that became religious later in life, I didn’t always “get” the traditional spirit of homemaking from my own family. I therefore sought out relationships with more experienced Jewish families and it’s those relationships that gave me most of my knowledge for how to run a Jewish home.
Think about it. Put yourself in a room of ten experienced Jewish women. Now, ask that group a question and you are getting experienced advice times ten.
In fact, the synergy of the entire group produces not just 10 separate ways of doing this. Each way has gone through rigorous debate. In the end, you’ve got something solid, based on experience as opposed to theory or hunches. You don’t need to experiment in order to be successful!
Are you wondering whether getting my notes is worth $37 when you could do the same thing yourself? Again, I think many of us suffer from “Supermom” complex, thinking that we have to do EVERYTHING ourselves. I’ve learned a lot about what makes business people successful and in almost all of my studies, the idea of valuing your time and effectively “outsourcing” the things that take you a lot of time. Or, put another way: Stay focused on the things you love to do, are p ionate about, and excel at rather than spreading yourself too thin in areas you don’t love.
